Overview

The OIT was created in January 1994 to implement and support a $20 million multi-year technology plan. At that time, $2.3 million was available for the acquisition of hardware, software, network infrastructure, and training. To support the OIT in its efforts, Crystal Data Systems of Huntsville, Alabama was engaged in a consulting capacity. The partnership between OIT and Crystal Data Systems led to the creation of 18 local area networks and the development of this Internet site.

Efforts are underway to secure funding for the technology plan. By means of grants, municipal bonds, corporate donations and general district funds, the gains started in 1994 are continuing. Dr. B.L. Davis, former superintendent of schools for Decatur, stated that implementing technology in education is a journey. This journey is on going and long. The fruits of this journey will be that students, teachers, and administrator will be able to expand their access to information and use applications that move them beyond the traditional learning tools used in classrooms. Our students are going to live and work in a world community that will require first hand knowledge of technology. Our goal is to provide them with the tools to be able to compete in the 21st century.
