Magnet Schools (1st – 5th grade)

The Magnet Program in Decatur, Alabama, was established in 1980 for selected, high-achieving students as well as intellectually gifted students. Selected students throughout the city in the first and second grades attend Benjamin Davis Elementary School and those in the third, fourth and fifth grades attend Leon Sheffield Elementary School. Although the program is located on two campuses, administrators and facilities work together to insure continuity and ease of transition.

Curriculum offerings stress the Alabama Courses of Study as a spring board for supplemental activities. Thematic units, compacting time to work on enrichment projects, hands-on activities, computers at all grade levels, Spanish instruction, and the pursuit of individual student interests help make the magnet program unique.
