ALBUM FOR MEMORY IMPAIRED

This album will help the memory impaired to recognize friends and family members.  It would be very useful for anyone who has had a head injury, dementia or Alzheimer’s.  The album will be a priceless treasure to your family.

AS THE PEN SPINS

This four week class is designed to get the creative writing juices flowing.  Whether you are a seasoned writer or can barely hold a pen in your hand, you will find inspiration in “As The Pen Spins.”  Explore such hilariously informative topics as “Give the Dog a Bone” and “Stand by Your Pen.”  There are 12 stimulating design tips in all, designed to get your pen spinning.

BEGINNING PAINTING FOR ADULTS (NEW!)

From a conceptual sketch to the finished product, students will be guided through the process of color selection and brush stroke techniques.  Call 341-0562 to reserve a place in class and to get supply list.

BRIDGE/BEGINNING

Learn to play a satisfactory game of bridge almost immediately. Fundamentals will be taught through lectures, demonstrations and play of hand.  Instruction will include five-card major bidding, point count evaluation and a lot more.

CAKE DECORATING/BEGINNING

Learn fun decorating techniques to create beautiful cakes! Borders, writing, roses and basket weaving will be taught.  We will also learn to transfer simple images to a cake for a totally custom and free-handed effect.  Supply list given first night.

CHAIR CANING/FLAT WEAVE

Time to spruce up that antique chair?  Learn the flat weave method of caning.  Bring a small chair or stool (cleaned out), desk stapler, scissors, table knife and bucket.  Cane may be purchased from instructor.

DECATUR STYLE (DAY)

Celebrate National Historic Preservation in this brown bag lunch series that will meet each Wednesday (October 3, 10, 17 and 24.) Each week the class will study a different period in local architectural style, exploring how history has shaped us as individuals, as a community and the way in which we choose to build.  The class will conclude with an optional walking tour on Wednesday, October 31 at 12:00 p.m.  Guests are invited to bring their brown bag lunch to the program!

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY WITH SHOOTING ASSIGNMENTS (NEW!)

This course will cover the basic principles and operations of digital cameras as well as the rules and elements of good photographic composition.  Shooting assignments will be given the first night and critiqued the second night.  Bring your camera and instruction book!

DOG OBEDIENCE/BEGINNING

Teach your dog (four months or older) the commands of heel, sit, down, come and stay.  Bring a choke collar and a six-foot leather or cotton web lead.  You must have a record of shots and bring it to class the first night!  No dogs the first night!  Only one trainer per dog!  No observers!  No class October 8.

An expert in genealogy will help you begin tracing your “family tree.”  Topics covered will be organizing your materials and where to go from there.  After you’ve learned the basics you will enjoy the “Hunt for History.”

KNITTING/BEGINNING

Experience the joy of this popular form of needlework.  Add knitted accessories to your wardrobe.  You will learn to figure measurements and how to follow directions.  Basic stitches will be taught using wool, acrylic or cotton yarn.  Students will complete a project of your choice.

Series of classes designed to help you understand how to make your money work harder for you.  Topics will include: (1) understanding stocks and bonds, (2) basic financial planning, (3) mutual funds, (4) 401K plans, (5) buy or lease a car and (6) refinancing your home.  Taught by an Independent Certified Financial Planner.

YOGA/BEGINNING

This gentle physical exercise is becoming increasingly popular because of its many health benefits, which include increasing and maintaining flexibility and muscle tone.  Perfect for those who need an exercise routine which does not place adverse stress on bones, joints, muscles, etc.  Also recommended for the older person who wants to begin a regular exercise program.  Bring a mat.
