Eastwood PTA Newsletter
January 2008
Dear Parents,
What an exciting month we have ahead of us at Eastwood! Please keep reading to see what’s happening at our school!
On January 16th, Illustrator Michael White visited our school as part of our Cultural Arts Program. Mr. White has illustrated three books including The Library Dragon. He worked with the children in small groups using a hands-on approach to teach them about his work. Families had the option of purchasing a book from the Learning Tree to be signed by him during his visit! What a terrific keepsake of the day! Thank you to Emily Payton for scheduling the event!
Popcorn Friday was January 18th… only this time it was compliments of PTA! Remember, four times a year as a reward with report cards we serve popcorn for FREE! Thanks to Candi Ivy for chairing this committee!
Eastwood School was the big winner at the Citywide Reflections judging with 11 out of 28 elementary school winners. [Click on News and Events on the above menu] Now, winners will go on to the state level. Please contact me or Rachel Vought if you receive notification by mail that your child is a state winner! We will want to celebrate your good news! City winners will be honored at a banquet at Decatur High School on April 20th at 2:00pm.
It was standing room only at Eastwood’s 2nd annual Eastwood Idol competition! Thank you to all of our families who came out for our January Family Night! PTA loves to create opportunities for parents and children to be at school together! And what a talented bunch of students we have here at Eastwood! Thank you to Angie Cushing and all of her committee members who made the evening spectacular!
DVDs of the event are available for $5 upon request. Congratulations to all of our participants in the EW Idol competition for a job well done! The results were… 5th place – Mary Ella Scott (piano), 4th place – Falon Richie (vocal), 3rd place – Eli and Adam Carle (band), 2nd place – Braxton Higdon (vocal), and the 2008 Eastwood Idols – Rowe Peebles and Joe Sanders (dance).
EW Idol wasn’t your typical PTA General Membership Meeting, but we still wanted to reward the teacher with the highest PTA attendance. The winner was Ms. Evans’ 3rd grade class. Mrs. Evans will receive a $25 giftcard from Target!
February 11-15th is National PTA Take Your Family to School Week. Eastwood is participating in this celebration by showcasing our Book Fair. On February 12th, we will have a special family night from 5-7pm. Parents and children will be able to enjoy the Book Fair, Science Posters, and Reflections entries. Also, we will be serving supper. The cost is $2 for one slice of pizza, a drink, and a dessert payable at the door! This evening will serve as our February General Membership Meeting! Thanks to Amy White and her committee for all their hard
work!
Last but not least, our nominating committee (Wendy Crane, Lisa Sturges, and Melissa Dickman) has been hard at work. The slate of officers for the 2008-2009
school year is…
President: Deanna Lyons
First Vice-president: Candi Ivy
Second Vice-president: Kerry Burroughs
Secretary: Alice Buice
Treasurer: Tracie Rosencrance
Elections will be held at the April General Membership Meeting on April 15th at
6:00pm. Thank you to these parents in advance for their commitment to EW!
Thank you to all of our families for supporting Eastwood!
