What's Going On In Music Class?

1st	1st Graders have begun the year learning about Patriotism. We have learned and will be learning many songs that represent our country. They are compiling the songs we've learned into a Patriotic songbook. Look for those to come home at the end of the nine-weeks. We've also discussed patterns in song forms to go along with our IB planner on patterns. We're trying to further understand our IB attitudes and have discussed the attitudes mentioned in our new school song, Arm In Arm.
2nd	2nd Graders are working on patriotic songs as well. We are putting together a Patriotic Songbook and are becoming "experienced " singers. We have demonstrated correct singing posture and breathing techniques. We have also begun discussing famous composers to get us thinking about what makes people famous and is being famous a good thing.
3rd	3rd Graders have begun learning the elements of music. We have discussed melody and will be studying harmony, rhythm, tempo, & dynamics. The students will be taking listening tests on these topics and will bring home an Elements of Music book at the end of the nine-weeks.
4th	4th Graders have started composing music. We have completed and performed our first composition with rhythm instruments and are on our way to becoming great composers. We will be composing or performing each week.
5th	5th Graders have done a review composition and are transcribing their work for piano. We will begin in the piano lab soon learning to play our own compositions. We will spend most of the year at the pianos.
