JAPANESE SUMI`E

BRANCHES & FLOWERS

1st & 2nd Graders at Benjamin Davis Elementary, 2005

We began our journey learning about Japanese sumi`e painting by learning how to paint long, fluid branches and beautiful flowers. We first did a pre-assessment painting where we painted a branch with no instruction. This was saved so we can see how much we have learned as far as brush technique is concerned and the Japanese sumi`e style .

Our Pre-Assessment and Final

Branches With Flowers

We began by using watercolor sets and recalling from our imagination what a flowered branch looks like. During the next class we learned about the sumi`e technique of painting and how a branch actually looks.

After learning how to manipulate the brush and create a variety of strokes, we began our sumi`e branch. We pulled a long interesting line for the main part of the branch.

Additional branches and twigs were added, experimenting with how the pressure on the brush tip can create tiny lines.

The flower petals were created by using the brush as a stamp. The interesting coloration of each petal comes from the intensity of color left on the hair of the brush. The leaves of the tree were created using our "flick" technique.
