Quilts of Gee's Bend

The students learned how the environment in which these ladies live influences the designs they create in their quilts. For instance, there are patterns created by the slats of wood, the newspaper insulation on their walls, and the patched exterior of the buildings.

Our project used the pattern from newspaper to create our own paper quilt. Students created their own design by drawing a variety of shapes using what they find on their half sheet of newspaper.

Then the students picked the papers that they want to use to fill the shape designs. A variety of construction paper, wall paper, and tissue papers were at their disposal. Students measured, folded, and cut-out their numbered shapes before they were glued down to the newspaper. The final step was to add the fan shaped stitch with a permanent marker.

Our quilts turned out really great!
