This is a service learning project to help raise awareness of Autism. What began as an elementary level art project turned into an outpouring of community support. The need is to have 8,000 butterflies made to represent the 8,000 children diagnosed with Autism in the state of Alabama. These are to be displayed at the 2nd annual Decatur Storm Baseball Tournament in April which benefits the Autism Society of Alabama. Decatur City Schools, Kindergarten through 12th grade, along with private and home schooled children, churches and daycares have chipped in to create the 8,000 butterflies which will be laminated and put on display not only in April but on March 20th in Montgomery. This special display will be presented to Governor Riley as he meets with parents and advocates of autistic children. |

The parent incharge of this is Wendy Ellis. She has 3 children, one of which is Brayden, who is autistic and attending Somerville Road Elementary School. Brad, her middle son, plays on the Decatur Storm baseball team. Her oldest son, Brett, wrote a song in honor of his sister called, "Braydie's Song," which mentions how we all want to fly like butterflies (be independent) and that autistic children need help getting their wings. That's why we call this project, "Give Them Wings." | |
