SPACE The element of Art that has two parts, positve & negative. POSITIVE SPACE is something that takes up space, like the flake itself. NEGATIVE SPACE is the empty space around the positive space. |

SYMMETRICAL BALANCE Balance that is equally weighted on both sides. In a composition it means that it can be folded in half, like a butterfly, and be identical on both sides. |
Third and Fourth graders at Leon Sheffield created snowflake compositions that experimented with space, an element of art, and symmetrical balance, a principle of design. The students had two different sized squares in white and light blue that they cut into snowflakes. They kept the cut-away scraps and arranged their composition on a contrasting background paper. |
