About the Artist

I've always been interested in creating art, it didn't matter what the media was, it was the act of creating and losing one's self in the process that captured me. I was not as fortunate as my students that I teach today that have elementary art classes but I created constantly.

My high school training gave me the desire to work with all different kinds of media, from clay to batik, pencil to printmaking. When I went to the University of Montevallo, I had to no idea what my major would be but I knew that I wanted it to be something creative. My first college art class was Drawing I and I didn't know if art was just a hobby or something I could actually major in. On the first day the instructor told us that our work would be compared and graded against Art Majors work so if we thought it was a easy course we should leave. Well, if I hadn't had stayed and got the reinforcement I needed I wouldn't be teaching or creating today.

My favorite media is graphite but I love to sculpt and paint. When I have occasion to try something new I love to experiment.  I have a painterly style in my drawing and enjoy getting lost in the immersion of the process. I tend to be very realistic but I enjoy working in the non-objective arena, working with an element of art or principle of design.

I have not found my niche,` as some artists have, because I experiment so much for my students and their art units. As of late I've been experimenting with sumi`e painting - a beautiful art that is so inspiring  and beautiful in its simplicity. I enjoy allowing the brush to flow across the page to illuminate the tenderness of a leaf, or the coarseness of the bark of the plum blossom tree. The ability to manipulate the brush in this technique has helped me in my painting tremendously.

Art that I've created for the community or to sell has been comprised of murals, painted ornaments, drawings or logos. I've never really considered myself a painter because I have had no official training. Typically if I have painted, or created anything for that matter, it has been on a grande scale. I've found it difficult to do anything small.

On my portfolio page are links to a variety of arts that I've created. Come back often, I'll be adding more work as I find the time.
