INTRODUCTION TO DRAMATICS - 0293 (9-12) General dramatics instruction introducing basic theatrical terminology, theatre history, stage directions, and theatre appreciation. This course includes opportunities for a student to gain self-confidence through improvisation activities and theatre games. MANDATORY attendance at all Austin theatrical productions is required. Excellent class to fulfill fine arts credit, but will not count as an English credit. Teacher recommendation required.

 

INTERMEDIATE DRAMATICS - 0294 (9-12) For students interested in being a part of the Austin High Drama Department throughout high school. In depth dramatics instructions using theatrical terminology, stage direction, artistic interpretation, and speech to create live performance. Participation in improvisation, monologues, duet and group scenes will be stressed, as well as instruction in basic stage make-up, costume, and set design, and light and sound operation. Students may participate in statewide theatre competition, and MANDATORY participation in the Austin theatrical productions in required. Counts as fine arts credit, but not English credit. By audition and teacher recommendation only.

 

ADVANCED DRAMATICS - 0295 (10-12) For students continuing in the Austin Drama Department. More in-depth instruction and application of theatrical principals and acting techniques, as well as theatre activities including group and individual projects. Greater hands-on opportunities in the technical areas of theatre production with a concentration on Drama Department shows. Students participate in statewide theatre competition, and MANDATORY participation in the Austin theatrical productions in required. Counts as fine arts credit, but not English credit. Either Intro or Intermediate Dramatics class is requirement. Drama teacher approval only.

 

STAGE PRODUCTION - 0296 (10-12) For students interested in the behind-the-scenes aspect of theatre. Individualized and independent study of dramatic/comedic/musical theatre scripts and the planning of a large scale production. Additional hands-on experience in various elements of technical theatre. Students will direct and produce a "showcase" event at the end of the year, as well as help plan and direct Austin Drama Department productions. Students will not be limited to directing, but may audition for all Austin plays if desired. Students may participate in statewide theatre competition, and MANDATORY participation in the Austin theatrical productions in required. Counts as fine arts credit, but not English credit. Either Intro or Intermediate Dramatics class is requirement. Drama teacher approval only.
