The following courses are IB courses which are taken by the IB students. The courses are divided by the group in which the class belongs.

 

GROUP 1 - LANGUAGE A


Summer Reading -
Students accepted into the IB Program will be given specific assignments for summer reading each year.

IB ENGLISH 11 - 0020 (11) This course is the first part of a two-year IB curriculum that prepares students for the higher-level (HL) examination in literature and composition. Student assessment will be based on IB language curriculum's rubics. Literature selections will cover many world literature and its themes. Prerequisite: Acceptance into the IB Program

IB ENGLISH 12 - 0021 (12) This course is the second part of the two-year IB curriculum preparing students for the higher-level (HL) examination in literature and composition. Course selections and assessment will be based on IB language curriculum's rubics. Prerequisite: IB English 11 and retention in IB Program

 

GROUP 2 - LANGUAGE B

IB FRENCH 11 - 4251 (11) This course is the first part of a two-year IB curriculum that prepares students for the standard level (SL) examination in French. Emphasis is placed in the active communication in the language and analysis of French culture and literature. Prerequisite: At least 2 years of French and acceptance into the IB Program.

 

IB FRENCH 12 - 4252 This course is the second part of a two-year IB curriculum that prepares students for the standard level (SL) examination in French. Emphasis is placed in the active communication in the language and analysis of French culture and literature. Prerequisite: IB French 11 and acceptance into the IB Program.

 

IB SPANISH 11 - 4702 (11) This course is the first part of a two-year IB curriculum that prepares students for the standard level (SL) examination in Spanish Emphasis is placed in the active communication in the language and analysis of Hispanic culture and literature. Prerequisite: IB Spanish 11 and acceptance into the IB Program.

 

IB SPANISH 12 - 4703 (12) This course is the second part of a two-year IB curriculum that prepares students for the standard level (SL) examination in Spanish Emphasis is placed in the active communication in the language and analysis of Hispanic culture and literature. Prerequisite: At least 2 years of Spanish and acceptance into the IB Program

 

GROUP 3 - INDIVIDUALS AND SOCIETIES

 

IB HISTORY OF THE AMERICAS 11 - (2140) This course is the first part of a two-year IB curriculum that prepares students for the higher-level (HL) examination in the History of the Americas. This year is a comparative study of the United States, Canada, and South America. Prerequisite: Acceptance into the IB Program, Honors 10 American History or AP American History 10.

 

IB HISTORY OF THE AMERICAS 12 - (2141) This course is the second part of a two-year IB curriculum that prepares students for the higher-level (HL) examination in the History of the Americas. This course takes the place of Government and Economics and has a focus on twentieth-century World History Prerequisite: IB History of the Americas 11, and acceptance into the IB Program.

 

GROUP 4 - EXPERIMENTAL SCIENCE

 

IB BIOLOGY 11 - 3115 This course begins the advanced study of biology topics, which are covered in the higher-level (HL) examination. Emphasis is placed on extensive laboratory experiences that apply scientific knowledge. Students are required to maintain a lab notebook. Prerequisite: Acceptance into the IB Program.

 

IB BIOLOGY 12 - 3116 This course Continues the advanced study of college level biology topics, which are covered in the higher-level (HL) examination. Emphasis is placed on extensive laboratory experiences that apply scientific knowledge. Students are required to maintain a lab notebook. Prerequisite: IB Biology 11 and acceptance into the IB Program.+

 

GROUP 5 - MATHEMATICS

 

IB PRECALCULUS - 1262 (Grade 11) This course covers the Precalculus curriculum plus added topics to meet IB requirements as well as producing portfolio work for the IB Diploma. Students advance from this course into Calculus where they prepare for the IB examination. Prerequisite: Acceptance into the IB Program, signature required.

 

IB CALCULUS W/STATS - 1263 (Grade 12)

 

IB MATH STUDIES - 1264 ( 11 or 12 ) is a one year course that provides a realistic mathematics course for students with varied backgrounds and abilities.  The curriculum includes the study of function, computation, statistics and probability, business techniques, conic sections, geometry, and trigonometry.  The skills needed to cope with the mathematical demands of a technical society are developed and emphasis is placed on the application of mathematics to real-life situations. Prerequisite: Alg II w/Trigonometry

 

GROUP 6 - THE ARTS

 

IB SYMPHONIC BAND - 5740 (11-12) This course consists of the requirements of Symphonic Band and additional curriculum to prepare students to take the IB Music (SL) exam. The additional music is covered outside the Symphonic Band hours. Students will demonstrate their ability to aurally analyze and describe music using appropriate musical terminology and demonstrate an ability to recognize, identify, analyze, speculate, and make connections to other music.

 

IB CHAMBER CHOIR - 5750 (11-12) This course consists of the requirements on Chamber Choir and additional curriculum to prepare students to take the IB Music (SL) exam. The additional music is covered outside the Chamber Choir hours. Students will demonstrate their ability to aurally analyze and describe music using appropriate musical terminology and demonstrate an ability to recognize, identify, analyze, speculate, and make connections to other music.

 

IB VISUAL ARTS II -5756(11) is the first year of a two-year course that guides students along the path to knowledge, understanding, appreciation, and skill development in Visual Arts. Students will learn the many facets of art including history, impact upon culture, and the ways by which it can be created. Students will learn to make their own knowledgeable and intelligent decisions about works of art representing a range of diverse styles. This course promotes learning of three kinds: learning from works of art, or aesthetics and art criticism; learning about works of art or art history; and learning how to make art, or art studio. Prerequisite: Art I 

 

IB VISUAL ARTS 12 -5757(12) is the second year of a two-year course that guides students along the path to knowledge, understanding, appreciation, and skill development in Visual Arts. Students will learn the many facets of art including history, impact upon culture, and the ways by which it can be created. Students will learn to make their own knowledgeable and intelligent decisions about works of art representing a range of diverse styles. This course promotes learning of three kinds: learning from works of art, or aesthetics and art criticism; learning about works of art or art history; and learning how to make art, or art studio. Prerequisite: Art I and IB VISUAL ARTS II 

 

IB CHEMISTRY SL (optional) - 3023 (grade 11) replaces IB Symphonic Band, IB Chamber Choir or IB Visual Art.  This course introduces colledge level chemistry topics which are covered on standard-level IB examination. Extensive labwork as well as a collabrotive project will be required.  This is a one-year course.

 

IB INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN A GLOBAL SOCIETY SL (ITGS) -8141 (Grade 11) is the study and evaluation of the impact of information technology (IT) on individuals and society. It explores the advantages and disadvantages of the use of digitized information at the local and global level. ITGS provides a framework for the student to make informed judgments and decisions about the use of IT within social contexts. Although ITGS shares methods of critical investigation and analysis with other social sciences, it also considers ethical questions found in the study of philosophy. Students come into contact with IT on a daily basis because it is so pervasive in the world in which we live. This widespread use of IT inevitably raises important questions about social and ethical issues that shape out society today. ITGS offers an opportunity for a systematic study of these issues, whose range is such that they fall outside the scope of any other single discipline.

 

IB PSYCHOLOGY SL - 2142 This course is Group 6 IB elective to be taken in the 11th grade. IB Psychology is the study of human behavior from an empirical perspective. Students learn to design and execute experiments as well as to interpret their findings. Content of the course includes a study of psychologists and their theories as well as the most recent research findings across various fields of the discipline. A primary emphasis in this course is on utilizing appropriate research to support points made in essays and class directions.

 

IB DESIGN TECH SL - 7477 Students must complete topics such as raw materials to final product, manufacturing processes and techniques, production system, clean technology and green design, microstructures and macrostructures, food technology, CAD design, manufacture and production, Health and Electronics.

 

ADDITIONAL COURSE REQUIREMENT

 

THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE - 8140 (Grade 11 & 12) - This course represents the cornerstone of the IB curriculum. Students are involved in critical examination of knowledge through readings, discussion, and writings based on the perspectives of language, logic, perception, mathematics, history, science, ethics, politics, and the arts. Prerequisite: Retention in the IB Program.
