HONORS BIOLOGY - 3190 (9) is a core science course that focuses on the basic concepts and skills required in the study of living systems and organisms. This course is recommended as accelerated preparation for mathematically advanced, highly motivated students interested in Advanced Placement Sciences and/or International Baccalaureate Courses. Students will be required to perform laboratory investigations, problem-solving activities, keep records, make reports, present oral and written projects, and participate in discussions regarding the results and conclusions of scientific investigations. CHEMISTRY II - 3150 (11-12) is a third-level physical science course designed to introduce students to organic chemistry and advanced lab work for one-half of the course time. Special lab topics include qualitative analysis, micro techinques, and instrumentation. Prerequisite: Chemistry I with teacher approval. Credit in Chemistry II fulfills a science elective requirement for either diploma.
PHYSICS - 3230 (11-12) is a core science course with content that addresses the properties of physical matter, physical quantities, and their relationships. Studies include, but may not be limited to, mechanics, heat, light, sound, electricity, and magnetism. Students will be required to perform laboratory investigations, problem-solving activities, keep records, make reports, present oral and written projects, and participate in discussions regarding the results and conclusions of scientific investigations. Prerequisites: Successful completion of Physical Science and Algebra II W/ Trigonometry. Credit hours in Honors Physical Science precludes credit in this course. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE - 3102 (11-12) is an elective science course emphasizing a broad view of the biosphere and physical parameters that affect it. Studies include, but are not limited to, energy resources, environmental quality, and human practices and their effect on the environment. EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE - 3105 is an elective science course emphasizing an advanced study of Earth and perspectives of the universe from Earth as well as future challenges and technologies required for space exploration. Students will be required to perform laboratory investigations, problem-solving activities, keep records, make reports, present oral and written projects, and participate in discussions regarding the results and conclusions of scientific investigations. ADVANCED PLACEMENT CHEMISTRY - 3020 (11-12) consists of two semesters of college-level chemistry, and two semesters of laboratory. An in-depth study of all topics is designed to make the college chemistry course no more than a review. The laboratory consists of qualitative analysis with selected labs in specialized areas. Upon completion of the course, students will take an exam and with an acceptable score may receive credit from the college in which they enroll. Prerequisites: Completion of Chemistry, Honors Physical Science. Credit in AP Chemistry fulfills a science elective requirement for either diploma.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT BIOLOGY - 3018
(11-12) Upon successful completion of both semesters of
this course, the student will have two options. He/she may receive college
credit (8 hours) through Calhoun Community College, for College Biology 103 and
104 (Lab work, at Calhoun, and tuition paid to Calhoun, are required to receive
credit) or he/she may take the AP exam with the possibility of credit given by
another post secondary education.
The first semester (Bio 103) is an introductory course for bother science and
non-science majors. It covers physical, chemical, and biological principles
common to all organisms. These principles are explained through a study of cell
structure and function, cellular reproduction, basic chemistry, cell energies.
the process of photosynthesis, and Mendelian and molecular genetics. also
included are the scientific method, basic principles of evolution, and an
overview of the diversity of life with emphasis on viruses, prokaryotes, and
protists.
The Second semester (Bio 104) involves the basic ecology and evolutionary
relationships of plants and animals and a survey of plant and animal diversity
including classification, morphology, physiology, and reproduction. Prerequisites:
Completion of Biology or honors Biology, and Chemistry or Honors Physical
Science. Credit in AP Biology fulfills a science elective requirement for either
diploma.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT PHYSICS-B - 3420 (11-12) s a non-calculus based physics course that includes mechanics, thermodynamics, waves and optics, electromagnetism, atomic and nuclear physics. Methods of instruction include, problem-solving, with limited experimental development of concepts. AP Physics-B is a college level course and is designed for the student who enjoys academic challenges. Upon completion of the course, students will take an exam and with an acceptable score may receive credit for college in which they enroll. Prerequisites: Completion of Honors Physical Science, Physics, or AP Chemistry and Algebra II W/ Trigonometry. Credit in AP Physics-B fulfills a science elective requirement for either diploma.
