Automotive Service Technology

Purpose

The purpose of the Automotive Service Technology program is to prepare students to enter and advance in productive careers in automotive repair and/or to enter postsecondary education in automotive repair.  This program focuses on helping students develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed in automotive repair jobs.  The program is a combination of three elements: classroom instruction, hands-on training in the automotive shop/lab, and live work on students' and teachers' vehicles.

Automotive Service Technology Courses

Exploration Into Technical Education is designed to give an overview of the Technical Education programs offered at Austin High School.  The course is open to freshmen only.  In the exploration program, students have the opportunity to spend twelve weeks in the automotive program, twelve weeks in the machine tool program, and twelve weeks in the drafting program.  The objective of this course is to allow the student the opportunity to determine which of the three courses he/she likes best.

AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE TECHNOLOGY I is designed to introduce students to the field of Automotive Repair. The first semester will consist of training in the areas of shop safety, basic shop tools and equipment, and Electrical/electronics I. Second semester training will be in the areas of Electrical/electrics II and Brakes I. NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation) certified program and instructor. NOTE: Students must complete all of the tasks assigned in this course before they can advance to Automotive Service Technology II.

AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE TECHNOLOGY II  is a continuation of Automotive Service Technology I. The first semester of this course will consist of training in the areas of Brakes II/Suspension and Steering, with the second semester concentrating on Engine Performance I. NATEF certified program and instructor. NOTE: Students must complete all of the tasks assigned in this course before they can advance to Automotive Service Technology III.

AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE TECHNOLOGY III is a continuation of Automotive Service Technology II. The first semester of this course will consist of training in the area of Engine Performance II, with the second semester concentrating on Engine Repair/Heating and Air Conditioning. NATEF certified program and instructor. 

Admission to the Automotive Service Technology Program

Each prospective student must obtain permission from the instructor before entering the Auto Tech program.  This can be done in a short question/answer interview usually less than five minutes in length.

Instructor's Goal: The goal of the instructor in the Automotive Service Technology program is to help students become the very best in the field of automotive repair.

Current News: The Automotive Service Technology Programs has met all the requirements for National Certification in 5 areas of automotive repair. NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation) granted Austin's Automotive Service Technology Department National Certification in the areas of Electric/Electronic Systems, Engine Performance, Suspension/Steering, Brakes and Heating/Air Conditioning in January 2006. This certification is good for a period of six years, and will be up for renewal in January 2006. Several new pieces of Equipment , hardware, and software have been added to the program to ensure that we maintain the high standards required by NATEF. To date, we have received over $90,000 in grant monies for program enhancement from the State Department of Education and Senator Tommy Ed Roberts.
