Purpose:
Design Drafting Technology is the graphic means of
communication to bring new ideas to life. With proper use of its tools and
techniques, these ideas can be developed into usable technical drawings.
This course will concentrate on the basic technical skills which will prepare
students for continuing their education or entering the job market in a
technical field. The students will learn the universal language of
engineering and architecture. After acquiring the technical skills in this
course, a student may choose to pursue a career from a variety of occupations
such as architecture, engineering, interior design, landscaping, electronics,
welding, machine tool, and the building trades. By taking this course,
students will gain the knowledge to translate ideas, specifications, and
calculations of engineers and architects into accurate working drawings.
Upon successful completion of this course, the students should be able to read,
prepare, and design a complete set of working drawings. The students will
leave this course with the skills and confidence needed to compete in this fast
paced world of technology.
Exploration into Technology is designed to give an overview of the Technical Education programs offered at Austin High School. This course is open to freshmen only. In the exploration program, students have the opportunity to spend twelve weeks in the Drafting/Design Program, twelve weeks in the Machine Tools Program, and twelve weeks in the Automotive Service Technology Program.
Engineering Drawing I is designed to teach the basic skills needed in all engineering and architectural fields. Areas of study include safety, lettering, tools, alphabet of lines, scales, geometric construction, multi-view drawing, dimensioning, sections, and blueprint reading. Students are introduced to Auto CAD (Computer-Aided Design).
Engineering Drawing II will emphasize the use of AutoCAD. The drawing will include Pictorial Views, Auxiliary Views, threads and fasteners, and working drawings. Architectural Drafting will be introduced. Job seeking skills will be practiced. Prerequisite: Engineering Drawing I.
Engineering Drawing III will be based on Mechanical, Architectural (Residential and Commercial), Electrical, Electronic, and Civil Design. Mechanical drawing will introduce cams, gears, casting, forging, jig, and fixture drawings, and assembly drawings. 3D Solid modeling will be introduced. Job seeking skills will be practiced. Prerequisite: Engineering Drawing II.
Admission to the Drafting/Design Program
Each prospective student must obtain permission from the
instructor before entering the Drafting/Design program. This can be done
in a short question/answer interview, usually less than five minutes in length.
