Austin Chosen for Environmental Program
Twelve Alabama public schools have been selected as pilot schools for Project Community- a public/private partnership to enhance natural science education.
The free resource was announced September 4, 2007, by State Superintendent of Education Joe Morton; Dr. Doug Phillips, Project Community Director; Steve Cauthen, Executive director, Soil and Water Conservation Commission; Craig Sizemore, President, Alabama Association of Conservation Districts; Beth Stevens, Classroom teacher and Project Community Coordinator; and Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Ron Sparks.
Project community is a pilot educational program that uses the interdisciplinary design of the Discovering Alabama educational television series to make learning locally relevant. Project Community focuses on the natural resources of a particular community and provides free supplemental materials to teachers. Project Community seeks to inspire scientific curiosity, instill conservation awareness, and enhance classroom learning supportive of academic standards, particularly for the natural sciences.
