What is it?

The Alabama Reading Initiative is a K-12 comprehensive strategy to bring the best research on reading instruction

and the best teaching practices to classrooms in Alabama.  The primary method is intensive, research-based professional

development for teachers.  The Alabama Reading Initiative is targeted on three fronts:

1.  Strengthening reading instruction in the early grades;

2.  Continuously expanding all students' reading power and comprehension levels; and

3.  Intervening effectively with struggling readers.

How does it impact my child?

Brookhaven Middle School is proud to be an A.R.I school and strongly believes in its strategies to help

build successful readers.  BMS understands that solid reading skills is the essential ingredent for a recipe to academic success.

BMS has implemented the following A.R.I. strategies this school year:

         1.  BMS faculty participates in ongoing professional development in A.R.I. teaching strategies and best practices for the classroom.

         2.  BMS faculty participates in book studies to further investigate how to best implement reading strategies across the curriculum.  During the

              first semester, the BMS faculty read and discussed Stephanie Harvey's Strategies That Work.

          3. Two reading intervention teachers are provided through Title I funding to provide intensive reading strategy instruction to students who

              qualify for Title I services.

What can I do to help?

Parents are an important piece of the puzzle of student academic achievement.  Parents can set aside fifteen to thirty minutes

a day to read with their children.  Research has shown that allotted time devoted to reading everyday will increase student test

scores and reading ability.  Parents can also volunteer to be a "Guest Reader" at BMS.  If interested, please contact Joy Martin at joy.martin@dcs.edu.
