Media Center Policies and Guidelines

Media Center Guidelines:

  1. Everyone is respectful of others.
  2. Everyone comes to the media center with a purpose.
  3. Everyone returns materials to their proper place after use.
  4. Everyone helps to keep the media center neat and clean.
  5. Everyone will follow the Code of Student Conduct concerning the use of technology.

Media Center Policies:

Overdue Books – All library books are due one week from the day the book was checked out.  Books will be stamped on a date due slip to serve as a reminder as to when the book is due.  Students may check out up to three books.

Magazine Fines – Magazines may be checked out on an overnight basis.  Magazines can be checked out after 3:00 p.m. and must be returned before 8:00 a.m.  A late fine of .50 per day will be charged for overdue magazines.  Lost magazines are $4.

Lost/Damaged Books – Students must take complete responsibility for library materials checked out of the media center.  Students must agree to pay the damage fines assessed by the librarian or pay the cost to replace the materials in the event they are lost or stolen.  Students should check their materials for damage before leaving the media center.  Any damage found should be brought to Mrs. Wilkins or Mrs. Irons’ attention immediately.

Library Cards – Library Cards will be issued to each student at the beginning of the school year.  Students will use these cards to check out their library books.  Library cards help the library staff and student assistants to identify the borrower.  If a card is lost, the student will be responsible for replacing the card.  The school will issue the initial card but the student will be charged $2 for a replacement card.  Students will be responsible for presenting their library card each time loans are made.  Students will sign a form stating that they agree and understand this policy prior to checking out any library materials.

International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program will be implemented in the Cedar Ridge Media Center.  Students may use the Alabama Virtual Library (AVL) to access many books and periodicals in foreign languages.  The AVL can be accessed via the World Wide Web at www.avl.lib.al.us.  From the AVL home page, look for the EBSCOhost Web  and Informe databases for books and magazines in French, German and Spanish languages.  If your child does not have an AVL card, your child may see Mrs. Wilkins for an application.  It is totally free to all students in the state of Alabama.  Also, as funds become available the media center will be purchasing books written in other languages.

Love to Read?  Check out the Black Bear Reading Blog.  The blog address is http://booklady1965.edublogs.org.  This is your opportunity to post comments on books you have read and make comments on books others have read.  Your comments may stimulate someone else to read the book that you have discussed.  If you have any questions, see Mrs. Wilkins.
