What Can you do in High School to prepare?

Find out what you are good at and like doing.

There are skills tests and personality surveys on the internet or through your guidance office that will help you figure out what your strengths are. These surveys and tests are fun to take and can point you to careers that would be a good match for your skills and personality. This step is important because it will help you find a job you think is fun!

Find out more about the jobs that interest you most.

Take advantage of programs like Jr. Achievement Job Shadowing or career days. You can spend a day in a workplace that interests you and see what the job is really like.

Go to workforce expos, career fairs and talk to people who work in fields you are interested in. They can answer any questions you have and give you advice about how to prepare.

Be smart about choosing courses in high school.

Be smart when you choose your courses. Take as many advanced science and math courses as you can. Most of the high paying jobs of the future are technical and demand these skills.

Take advantage of any career or technology courses offered by your school such as healthcare, marketing or advanced technical courses. These will introduce you to basic skills that will be needed for the job that interests you. Some of these courses let you earn college credit while still in high school.
