Take a class trip to the zoo or a natural science center; then add to the "Ways Animals Move" graph (in Decatur, visit the Cook's Museum or the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge.)

Discuss what makes an animal a good pet; make a class graph of all the pets students have at home; have a local resource person come in to discuss pet care

Language Arts

Read The Salamander Room, by Anne Mazer; have students help compile a list of the way the main character changes his room for the salamander; ask why Brian's bed ends up in the woods at the conclusion of the story?

Listening skills: Read City Critters around the World by Amy Goldman Koss; draw and write about an animal that lives in a particular region or country; compile into a class book or computer presentation

Make a picture to show some ways in which animals are helpful to people; write about the ways that people are helpful to animals
