Generate a t-chart of living and nonliving things found in the terrarium and aquarium

Write a language experience story with class about the plants and animals they cared for during the unit; refer to questions in manual to facilitate their writing -- these questions may help you guide students in creating the Organisms Picture Dictionary

Visit library and challenge students to find the differences between alligators and crocodiles; write about and illustrate their findings

Visit a zoo; students adopt one animal on which to focus

  • Draw and share about the animals home; explain how the zoo meets the animal's needs
  • Invite a zookeeper into your classroom and talk about how the zoo meets the needs of its animals and plants; write a thank-you note to zookeeper or to the zoo.
  • Video tape the days events and each child in front of their adopted pet telling about their animal
  • Take digital pictures of each child in front of their adopted animal and write captions

Plan a trip to a local wildlife sanctuary; study mammals, birds, reptiles and fish that are native to the area. (In Decatur, visit the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge.)
