Listening skills: Read Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf by Lois Ehlert or The Seasons of Arnold's Apple Tree by Gail Gibbons; adopt a tree on the school grounds and have class list words to describe the tree; draw the way the tree would look at different times of the year

Listening skills: Read A Tree is Nice, by Janice May Udry; have students complete the sentence, "I think a tree is nice because___"

Journal sentence starters: "I was surprised that___." ;"I wonder about ___."

Extensions

Create a class mural of the terrarium and add to it as the unit progresses

Arrange for a local "Tree Expert" to visit your classroom to discuss the value of trees:

(In Decatur, "The Tree Lady", will present a 15-minute, interactive program explaining the uses for, and products made from trees. Contact the Decatur Chamber of Commerce and ask for Julia Chenault.)
