Alabama Science Safety Publication
Since the publication of the Alabama Course of Study Science (1995), the Alabama State Board of Education has adopted The Total Science Safety System, Elementary, ALABAMA edition (1998), to help teachers and administrators in the process of "planning, implementing, and evaluating the school science program." This is available in disk form at your school.
Safety Suggestions for Teachers
- Young children must be given guidelines for safe and appropriate use of materials:
- Model the correct use of materials.
- Emphasize that materials do not belong in ears, noses, eyes, or mouths.
- Students should be reminded not to rub their eyes when sanding.
- When nailing, students should be reminded to keep their eyes on the nail head.
- If any child has respiratory problems, such as asthma, use a handkerchief or bandanna as a mask to cover nose and mouth to keep out sawdust.
